What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC
I received a citation for unsafe movement today to the tune of $216. It was like 25 for the citation and 188 for court costs. Anyhow here is what happened, I do not agree with the officer and not so sure he applied the right citation for the scenario:
I was traveling Northbound on a 4 lane highway (speed limit 35mph) missed my turn and entered the center median (turning lane). Turned on my left turn signal and proceeded to make my u-turn. There was a motorcycle oncoming in the left lane but I felt I had plenty of time to make my turn so I did. The motorcycle was on the left lane, i made my u-turn in the right lane. The motorcycle happened to be a motorcycle cop he then pulled me over.
He stated I made an illegal u-turn and caused traffic to slow down (he was the only traffic around) there were no vehicles in the right lane I used. There was no "NO U-TURN" sign in this area, I guess his point was that he had to slow down. This was by no means a close call, any ideas?
NC has PJC which I could get so my insurance company will not charge me. but the company will see what it is, I have nothing else on my record.
I don't know if I can take a class, this was Henderson County and I know they offer the class for speeding tickets and reduce to "improper equipment" which is not chargeable at all, since it's not a moving violation.
As it stands I am looking at $150 insurance surcharge per year for 3 years (I am an Insurance Agent).
I have entertained an attorney, but no idea if that is worth my while cost wise, sure I will still have to pay court costs even if the ticket is dismissed. Seems this would be an easy one to get out of.
