My mother's aunt recently passed away in Queens New York without a will. We received a citation from the public administrator stating that there are 10 other beneficiaries and that we need to provide proof of kinship. We live in Florida. Is is necessary to retain a lawyer to handle this for us? The amount is about $250,000 split 10 ways. The lawyer I've contacted is in NY and charges 25-30% fee for money recovered. Is this necessary or can I just go through the Public Administrator to finalize this? Thanks.
