Should I be scared to give me SSN# on a job application? Also, if you are under 18, can they check your criminal record, if you had one?

Yes, giving your SSN if voluntary up to the point the potential employer offers a job or there are other requirements, such as a backround check. If requested, you may ask the following:
Why your number is needed;
How your number will be used;
What happens if you refuse; and
What law requires you to give your number.
If a criminal backround check is required, even if under 18, it can be done.

You should also be aware that if the purpose of asking for your SSN is to do a background check and you refuse permission, they are at liberty to say, "Thank you very much. Next!" and put your application in the don't-bother pile.

If you don't want to give it out unnecessarily, just put in the space " will provide upon job offer ". If you plan on working somewhere you are going to have give it to the employer eventually. So if there is something on your record chances are they are going to find out anyway. It is best just to be honest about it upfront. (If that is what you are worried about)

What I'm worried about is, can it mess up my life? What I understand is someone with your SSN can totally take your over your ident :S

Identity theft is something everyone worries about & it can happen to anyone. However, there are times when you will have to give out your SS# such as to an employer. Eventually (if you don't already - it seems from your post you are under 18) you will most likely have bank acct. numbers, credit card numbers, etc. You have to be very careful who you give the info out to but sometimes it still falls into the wrong hands.

thanks for replying, I just don't see how it is reasonable that eventually your employer can steal your ident. Like kroger's job application requires your SSN right off hand. how easy is it for them to steal it?

There are easier ways for people to get your SSN #. I wouldn't worry too much of that happening. Doesn't Kroger use electronic applications now?

Statistics show that you are in more danger of having your friends and relatives steal your identity than a prospective employer or other stranger.
