What is the name of your state? Oklahoma

Our son is 15yrs old.

This year he has received 8 referrals... referrals are what a teacher will give
for bad behavoir.

Today Oct 13, 2006 We received a phone call from the principal stating that one
of his teachers had given him a referral for not completing an assignment and
that he had a choice of being suspended or swatted. For not completing an assignment?

The vice principals stance on this is that since he has had so many referrals this year
mostly for hugging or holding hands with his girlfriend, or taking his mp3 player to school.
That every single referral he gets for the rest of the year will be a swat or suspension.

I asked the vice principal if other students who had that many referrals would also be
suspended for uncompleted assignments. I was told that it was his perogative on what
each students punishment was... So then asked him if this meant that another student
in that same class with the same assignment would get the same punishment since they
had more than 8 referrals for the year..... he stated no it was on an indvidual basis.

Another point..... my son was sick this week and actually missed Wednesday.
I asked him about the 1 day makeup for students that where sick..... he said it was
assigned that it didnt matter if Josh was sick, that he should have done it at home.
I said how? Josh did not know he was going to miss Wednesday.... this is only the
second day he's missed school this year and he's never been late.

I have had similiar problems with this school system the whole time my son has gone
to school here... where punishments are more strict for some students and less for others and not just concerning our son.

Since when is it ok to swat or suspend a student for not turning in an assignment.... wonder what college students or even some of us adult student would think of that. :(

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Oh and I already fax an appeal into the schools superintendant,
who literally stumbled all over himself when I was asking about that 1
makeup day that all the kids are suppose to be entitled too when their sick.

Since when it is appropriate for a parent (who is obviously failing in that role) to try to make excuses for a punk kid who obviously doesn't have a responsible or mature thought in his feeble head??

Our son is a good student A's and B's with an occasional splash of C's in there.
He doesnt miss school..... he's there in class every single day!

He had 1 sick day this year so far and that was this last wednesday....
He missed one other day for him and his dad to drive to Tulsa and buy
him a Trombone, since he just started band this year.

During his spare time our son works and his learning to build pc's, networks,
javascripts and he's learning some incredible flash programs on his own.

Not surprising considering his dad is a computer engineer for an oil company in Tulsa.

If you had read my post CORRECTLY you would have seen where I clearly stated
that the referrals he has received are from HOLDING HANDS... one was from taking
an mp3 player to school to listen to on the bus ride home.

I would seriously like to know what your vision is of a punk kid is..... sadly people like you rush to judge others without knowing anything about them. I feel sorry for you.

Any parents would be proud to have our son, he is an incredible sweet child that
is very sensitive and loves his 2yr old baby sister.. that he constantly brags about.

If this makes our son a punk kid like you state...... I will gladly keep him in place of some parents out there who are have real life serious problems with their teens.

Also, if this is the kind of help your offering, plz post on someone elses problems.
I need people who are sincere in helping... not attacking people.

Honestly? If my kid had 8 referrals within the first couple of months of school, I wouldn't much care what they were for. It would indicate that the kid has a problem following rules, and that would be quashed pretty darned quickly.

I'm sure if you look at the student handbook (which is generally sent home for parent AND student to sign) you'd find all of these issues addressed.

Ok maybe you people didnt read that part!! He is 15 for crying out loud!! He has 8 referrals for holding hands with his girlfriend and hugging and kissing! Give me a break! Where in the world do you see this as being a delinquent kid! Or that she lacks in parenting skills!! He is 15!! Maybe you people didnt have a boyfriend or gilrfriend at that age so you dont know what is normal. I totally believe OP in that this kid is a great kid. He just has hormones that cant be controlled. Swatting him on his backside is not going to stop the feelings in the front if you catch my drift;)
Now OP you stay on the superindendents butt. Make him do something about this school. Them saying that each child receives different treatment is a load of crap and should not be tolerated. I had similar issues with my daughters school last year for different reasons. In my experience they seem to be harder on the good kids and dont bother much with the bad ones since they expect it from them I guess. Take your matter to the school board. Make sure the school knows that you will not tolerate the unfair and unjust treatment of your child. In my district here they are not allowed to swat your child without your permission, AND it has to be in writing!!
As far as your son, put your foot down and threaten his bloody life to get himself under control and get his horney little hands OFF his girlfriend while at school.:D

The school district has rules.
THe school has rules.
The child has refused 8 times to follow said rules.
The chld has been disciplined 8 times for refusing to follow said rules.

this is NOT a legal issue. The school is well within their rights to send the child home for the rest of the year. And the school is well within their rights to discipline one child differently than another if not done so based on a protected status.

and THAT is all this thread is about. :

More gems from the mind of the ill-informed.
Again I will ask do you have kids? Do you have custody of your kids? If you are not here to try and help people and only to instigate the rest of us then go away. People searching for help do not need your attitude.
This woman is well within her rights to fight the school and the school system for the mistreatment of her child if she sees fit. He is not starting fights he is not disrupting the school. He is an honor roll kid who is thinking with his little friend in his pants. She neds to kick the kid in the butt herself. The school has NO RIGHT to touch him themselves.

Please point to anywhere I or other posters state this poster does NOT have the right to fight the school.

Secondly, NO school I have ever been associated with allows children with Cs on the 'Honor Role'.

And no one said he is being 'disruptive'. What was said and what the LEGAL issue is, is that he has been 'cited' 8 times. The child has refused to follow the rules for which he was cited and now is being punished. All within the rights the school enjoys as 'logo parentis'.

There is no sich thing as what? Fighting the school system! How wrong you are and you are the one who needs to update your knowledge on the law. Yes I know what the schools rights are. I also know what her rights are as a parent. I also stated where I am personaly familiar by a simialar situation in my own childs life. Where I had to put a restraining order on the principal and the guidance counselor at my daughters school, and a pedophile acting teacher. Thank you very much. I dont know where you get off thinking that I am an idiot or feeble minded as you put it. Again for the record I will say that you dont know me! You havent a clue on who I am. I already stated that OP needs to do something with her kid.

Mommi2fivekids I would hug you if I could.... thank you so much for the support.
I actually have an attorney right now who is going to go with us to the schoolboard with this.

I was very upset yesterday and did not do a very decent job of typing the whole problem down.

The referrals are NOT what he is being punished for..... he is being offered a swat or 1 day suspension for not finishing 1 classroom assignment in ONLY 1 class.

Mommi2fivekids.... has any of your children missed getting an assigment turned in?
Thats what this is... and the punishment for it is suspension or 1 swat

The referrals came into this because the vice principal told me point blank that since he has these 8 referals already, no matter what they are for, like he stated to me he didnt
care if all 8 referals where for running in the hall or having gum, but since Josh had these
that not finishing an assignment in 1 class is getting him suspended or swatted.

Our son is not on the Honor Roll.... but he is a GOOD PERSON... he's got puppy love for the first time and just cant understand why people are so upset from the idea of holding hands, something that our parents and their parents considered quite appropriate for young adults to do. They may be minors Belize but they are still human beings with feelings just like any adults would have. I imagine that if you walked into work with wife/girlfriend or whoever you care about and are holding hands, your fired or docked on your pay for doing it..... would fire you up I'm without any doubt!!!!!! and you would see all kinds of problems with it, but because this is a child (really a young adult) its different.
We cant allow them to be human I am believing more and more that are school systems are becoming more and more petty. What will it be next? I hate to wonder......

Its funny..... these same young adults.... holding hands in church last weekend was no problem..... Its really too bad that we've taken church and god out of our schools..... perhaps if it was there would be more understanding, caring and listening to our kids and
helping them to learn by their decision to become the person they need to be to get by in this world..... its all really sad...... :(

I am going to fight for our son on this and so is his dad... and all I want is a formal apology for my son.... he was embarrassed and humiliated in front of the whole office
yesterday. I can not and will not stand by and let adults of our school system laugh and ridicule children for no other reason than holding hands or missing turning in 1 assignments, its ludicrous for me NOT to!!!

Thanks again Mommi2fivekids...... HUGS to you and yours :)

No one said the kid was a delinquent.... only that he apparently thinks that rules don't apply to him.
