What is the name of your state? PA

i work for a company that manufactures stone veneer products. the job is very physically intensive and combined with being on the night shift it takes a hell of a toll on my body. recently they've added a whole new product line and are expanding it on a weekly basis. i don't mind working 8-10 hours a day, 6 days a week as i'm doing now but i'm worried that in the near future i'll get stuck working 12 hours or more everyday. do i have any right to refuse to work overtime if i'm not notified ahead of time that i'll have to?

Mandatory overtime is legal in all 50 states.

The only state that specifically protects an employee from being fired for refusing overtime is California, and even in California that protection only exists if you've already worked 72 hours in the week.

The state of Maine does not allow an employer to schedule an employee for more than 80 hours of OVERTIME in any given two week period.

In PA, and in all other states other than as already indicated, you can be fired for refusing to work overtime, as moburkes has told you.

Doesn't matter whether you're notified in advance or not. You can legally be told that you have to work overtime as you're putting on your coat to go home.

that sucks. i guess i'll just have to ride it out until they get tired of shelling out time and a half and hire some more people.

Guess what! Sometimes its less expensive to pay time and a half, than hire others. You might be waiting a LOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG time.
