Child responsible for Bills?

A few months ago I had to take my stepson to ER. Once we were there & going through the admitting process, the hospital admissions told me that in his records it shows that he is responsible for his own bills.

Is this possible? He is only 11.
I switched it to his fathers name (my husband) since we now have custody of him.... but at the time he would've been registered it would have been his biomom that would have set that up. His regular doctor is through that hospital, also.

I'm not really worried about who did it or why, but I am wondering if there could've been any repercussions towards HIS credit. What would happen to unpaid bills if there were any? Or would it just have been a *goof* and any bills really would've been forwarded to a parent?

You are worrying about the wrong thing. What you SHOULD be worrying about is the LEGAL repercussions of your altering HIS medical records without the legal authority to do so.

Therefore, come back and explain how you have such authority.

Since when do you take LEGAL advice from the hospital?

The plain fact is you have no authority to change the medical records of the child. You have no authority to be present when the medical records of the child are discussed or with the doctor when discussing the child's medical history.

Unless of course, you adopted this child? so, did you?

No. I didn't adopt him. But I was the only one there for him when he had to be at the ER. They HAD to discuss these things with me.

And I had the consent of his father AND mother to be there.

How else would I have been able to take him if I wasn't authorized?? The child lives with me...... of course I have a signed authorization.

Of course in my very first statement I DID disclose that the hospital gave me that information. Why would they give it to me if I wasn't authorized? I gave you enough facts to answer the question.
