Bought a vehicle on E-BAY

What is the name of your state? New York I bought a car on ebay. I sent him the Money by wire transfer. The deal was the the seller was going to register the car. I paid for the registeration fee also. When i picked up the car, the seller didnt have it registered. He had a temporary registration sticker on it. He said he will send me the plates that following week. It has been 4 months now and he says the ford dealer he bought it from lost the title. Now i have a car with no title. I am wondering if i can persue legal action against him. If anyone can help me that would be great. Thank you Much. Mark

Can you ask the DMV what to do in this situation?

You could call the police department of the seller's city and ask them if this is a situation to which you could file a police report. If so, the detective will pay a visit to the seller to get his/her side of the story. Sometimes a visit from the police incites a person to right a wrong. And it doesn't cost you anything but a long distance phone call.

I would also call the DMV in the seller's state and get the name of the DMV Inspector for that dealer's area. I had a similar problem last year - purchased a vehicle from a seller in NC, paid cash, got temporary tags, and while I agreed to register the vehicle, the seller was supposed to send me the title. In VA you have to register a vehicle within 30 days of purchase, and despite weekly calls to the seller, 30 days was approaching w/no title. Placed a call to the DMV Inspector, and lo and behold, the title showed up less than 3 days later, just in the nick of time. Had I not called the inspector, I doubt I would have seen that title within 30 days.
