What is the name of your state? vt....I read some stories about people going to jail for non payment of child support. I am perplexed by some newspaper readings how there have been people put in jail for not paying their child support. I also see that the courts use contempt of court as a way to do this. How is this legal? I thought our consitution says no one can be put into a prison for debt. Did the states find a way around this? Thanks

They are not put into jail for debt. They are put in to jail for failing to follow a legal order of the court. If they cannot pay their child support then they can file for a modification.

In some states they can also be charged with criminal neglect.
