What is the name of your state? Ohio

A guy on the internet wanted to buy a pair of speakers from me, but said he was from another country. He said he had a relative in the states. He sent me a check over the amount of the speakers, and wanted the rest of the money returned to him Western Union. His relative would come to collect the speakers. So, being the idiot that I am, I agree.
When I get the check, I take it to a local check cashing place to get it checked out. She tells me its fine, says she called the bank to verify the check, and just had to call her manager, since it was for a large amount. So, Im thinking, cool, its a real check. Then the cops come, and arrest me for forgery and passing bad checks, both 5th degree felonies. They are accusing me of making the check and atttempting to cash it knowing it was fake.
I have all the emails between me and this person, with him giving me instructions on who to forward the money to, complete with addresses, names, everything. I also have the envelope the check was mailed in.
Since I have this, showing that I did not make the check myself, what do you think will happen?

Forgot I ever made this post.

Well, I called a local tv reporter, he even went so far as to call the guy who sent me the bad check, and passed along his info to the court.
Didnt matter, they were trying to send me to prison for a year, so I pled guilty to a misdeameanor of attempted forgery. So, now thats on my record, along with a $500 fine.

Judicial system works again.:(

Well, the long and short of it most people know these deals are too good to be true and they do it anyway. I think the DA was over-reachin gin this case, but even you admitted to suspecting the check might be bad.

We get these things popping up all the time and I sometimes have to literally argue with people who WANT to believe that this cruud is real ... forget the common sense argument that says NO ONE who is legit is going to give you MORE money than they have to then ask you to send it back!!

Sorry about your bad deal. Did you try to hire an attorney?

This is the classic Nigerian 419 scam. I'm sorry you got taken by it, but as another poster stated, "If it sounds too good to be true...."

Visit www.bustedupcowgirl.com/scampage.html for more information on this scam. I certainly don't recommend doing what she did with these scammers, but it makes for entertaining reading.

IMO, I would have NEVER pled guilty to anything, except being gullible.
