What is the name of your state? CA

My son currently attends a private Episcopal school. The school is open to children of all faiths and he attends class with children of all races, who are Christian, Budhist, etc. It's time for him to graduate and move on to middle school.

I am currently looking at private middle schools. I know a guy who is on the Board of one of these schools, and he was telling me about the interview process. He explained they will ask what church we attend, as they will not accept Muslims, Budhists, etc. (This is a Christian school).

I also reviewed the application form for a Lutheran school, which asked the same question, in addition to asking what the child's ethnicity is.

The Catholic school doesn't care what color/religion you are, but charges higher tuition fees if you aren't Catholic.

I assume this must be lawful, since they are all apparently doing it, but it seems so wrong. Any opinions?

BTW-we are white protestants, so I'm not looking for any kind of action, just really surprised that this is going on.

you assume correctly. It is not illegal.
Otherwise, this is not a discussion forum. It's for simple legal advice and since you did not ask any other question, that's the extent of any help we can give you.

Yeah. I've never heard of the white protestant religion. Maybe its a cult![

Not in a cult, but I was baptized into a Protestant religion as a child. I am white, but I believe it it is for all races. Hell my Great Granny sends me the calender with my birth date on it every year, all 5 of my sisters are still on the damb thing.

Hubby is Lutheran, but his parents are Catholic due to his step mom converting his dad.

Who cares, one of the reason's I believe God does not have 4 walls.

Shay, you of all people should have known that I was joking. What does white have to do with the topic at hand, that OP needed to be clear that we all know what race she is?

what I found so fascinating is that she apparently had no problem with the fact that
one of the board of directors flat out told her they didn't take muslims or budhists, but wanted to know if it was some kind of discrimination if they charged any extra for the white non catholic kids.

Hold the flames please. It is apparent that my post was poorly written, in that most of you did not seem to understand what I was asking.

I DO have a problem with a school not accepting children of all faiths and wanted to know if this type of discrimination was legal. I believe I also mentioned that the Lutheran school inquired about the child's ethnicity. ( I also found distasteful). You might notice that I said I was very surprised this was going on.

I mention we are WASP, so that you would know that my son would not fit into the category these schools are apparently trying to avoid, (i.e. while I'm amazed by these parameters, I'm not looking for any action). Just wondering if this was lawful, as it seems wrong.

I'm not upset about not getting a discount at the Catholic school, just noticing that they don't care about nationality/religion/origin, just want more $$$ for non-Catholics.

My son has friends of all faiths and colors. I'd like to keep it this way. It makes life much more rich & interesting.

Belize was apparently the only one who understood & answered my question. Thanks.

Poorly written = poorly understood. Quite, quite basic.

You do grasp, do you not, that Entities such as schools like to gather statistical information? The transparency of the school's intention is so blatant -- if they ASK, then it makes it MUCH harder for the school to discriminate on the basis of ethnicity. Geezly Crow.

"Seems wrong" to YOU seems fine to me. What. Ever.

Guess why, O Compassionate Thinker? BECAUSE THE NONCATHOLICS HAVE CONTRIBUTED NOTHING TO THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL. Again, GEEEEZ! Members of the CHURCH, who contribute $$ and time and effort and supplies get a discount on tuition. Users who just walk in and use the school do not get a discount. Is that so hard to grasp?
