My friend works in a restaurant and is given a cash drawer with $300 a the start of the shift. Throughout the night she would make transactions, give the costumer their change and the left over would go into her tips. Then at the end of the night the employer would run a report to find out how much their should be in the register. If it is up the employer keeps the money and if it is down my friend has to pay the difference out of her pocket.

I just found something that says the employer cannot take the money from my friend if it is short, but can they keep the money if it is up?

thanks,

Not many of us work in food sells, so my first question to you is to post what you thought you found out, and we can then go from there.

If a register is "over", the money that is over belongs to the employer. I many cases, a good manager can determine why a register is "over" or "under". But common sense tells you that an employee may never take money from the register that does not belong to them.

In many cases, mistakes are made on the register [such as accidently voiding a transaction] that will appear to make the register over, when in fact it isn't.

Usually because the dimwit behind the register doesn't know how to make change and the dimwits in front of the register don't know how to count their own change.
In any case, no, the employee cannot keep overages.
