Transcript Withheld

I recently submitted a request for my transcript from my high school, and their response was: "Due to unpaid class fees, your transcript cannot be released to you at this time."

Can they do that? I don't have the ability to pay the ridiculous amount of money that they want, and not having a copy of my transcript is keeping me from applying to college.

So, can they legally withhold my transcript, preventing me from going to college?

Due to 4 years of welding, 2 years of auto body, lab fees, etc., the fees total almost $300

Anything they could charge me for, they did. I never payed them because I moved out of state and eventually forgot about the fees.

You're just going to have to bite the bullet and pay the fees if you want to get a copy of your transcripts. Honestly, you're lucky that the school even allowed you to GRADUATE without paying the fees.

Can't get 300 dollars until I get a job.
Can't get a job because I don't have a GED.

If you have no money, how were you planning on getting your GED and applying for college? There are usually fees associated with these things. You CAN get a job without a GED. Granted, it would most likely be a crappy job, but it would be a job none the less.

Then you don't need the transcript to apply for college because you don't have a GED and didn't graduate high school -- one of which is needed to go to college. So get some kind of job and pay the fees.

Depends on when however OP does have a skill.

Pay the fee's , it's only $300. Ask your parents or anyother relative if they can help you out with it. If they can't, get any job, supermarket, 7-11, etc. don't let pride screw you up.
Trust this from someone who is working his way out of debt, don't let these little things bite you in the arse, it already is now and may come back to haunt you down the road if they decide to start applying interest on it and such.
Right now you're youngand trying to get your act together, don't let silly pride, and a small stupid $300 fee stand in the way.

But, yes, it is absolutely legal that they withhold the transcript until you pay what you owe. The transcript belongs to the school.
