This retailer is definitely guilty of defamation of character, and my question is related to her and not the employee.sounds like maybe the employee did the right thing, and told her employer what had happened.

First of all defamation will be difficult to prove, you need to show that she knew that the information that she was giving, was incorrect and that she did so maliciously.This retailer is definitely guilty of defamation of character, and my question is related to her and not the employee.
