I finished classes in December and received a diploma from a private university. I verified with the business office & financial aid that my account was paid up. Now the school has contacted me saying I owe $1400 for last year's housing. They admit that a balance transfer I requested was misplaced and that they did not notify me. They also admit that they should have used a refund check they sent me to cover this expense. However they are also saying that the false information they provided me with does not change the fact that I have to pay this amount now. Is there any recourse I have?

You were required to pay the money. You never paid the money. You still owe the money.
