What is the name of your state? CA

I had someone post a mean and slanderous message on a message board for my employer that stated mean and nasty things about me (the employer is not involved in the board, does not own it or anything its just a random public board, but everyone reads it). I am worried I could be fired, can I sue?

This co-worker (I think I know who it is) posed as someone else (a random person) and stated things she knew about me that are not flattering. Yes they are true, but the fact that she posed as someone else is a lie isnt it?

Plus, they have nothing to do with work; they are things I did on my personal time or on business trips but not while working just while on the trips....

How do I prove who it is? I read on a webpage that I could get her IP Address and then supply it to my employer and they could tell me from which computer it came from, then I would know who to sue right?

Would my employer help pay for the court case since it involves me at work? Since she posed as someone else, and thats a lie, its still slander?

Thanks for the help; I am so worried I could get in trouble I need to know my options...What is the name of your state?

If what she said is true, then it is not slander. Google "slander".

But isnt she wrong in that she pretended to be someone else???She even made up the situation of how she heard these things about me....she totally tried to cover herself up...

Just because what she said is true, she lied in order write about it...

Short answer: no. And I know you want to believe it is, and will probably continue to insist it might be, and a lot of people here will keep telling you you have no case, so I'll leave that to you and them.

My thing is: Do you think if you're going to get in trouble if your employer finds out, it might be a good idea to not ask them to pay for the lawsuit? Maybe?

You have no cause to sue! You can't sue for the truth! Yes, it may not be very nice what the person did, but it doesn't give a cause for a lawsuit. As far as asking your employer to pay for the litigation. Even if you had a case, I would not ask my employer to get involved. That would open up your entire personal life to your employer, bad move.

Remember- People are protected in some cases, as far as their on line privacy. I am assuming the person used a fake screen name or something like that. So what, how many people use their real names on any internet forum. I doubt many do.

Mr/Ms Slanderlaw...my...what an unusual name! It IS your name isn't it? After all, you wouldn't want to pretend to be someone else, in order to cover up who you are....
