What is the name of your state? Arizona

my wife has a medical bill that is $470.00, we kept making payments for 78.00 as agreed by the collectors firm, but they now turned it over to a law office. (we know what could happen course). So they call us and the rep at this law office, said there ARE ways within reason to have this debt partially written off and us just make a smaller large payment in one payment because i told him we both with our incomes and a baby cannot afford the amount they want up front or even in the 3 monthly payment installments they want for $156 an some oddcents.

What are a few severe enough reasons/points that someone is let off or a file thrown out from any more debt???? my wife and i fit into one of these categories or circumstances. we need to know the severe circumstances that get debt collectors to write partially these accounts off?

The debt collector make commission on the money they collect from you, so they want more money.

When the debt collector is telling you that they'll write off the debt what does it mean ??? Will the remaining unpaid portion of the bill be sold to another collection agency which will continue to hound you & your wife??

Who owns the debt the medical service provider of the collection agency?

Will the collection agency put IN WRITING a letter saying that the bill is paid IN FULL and that it will never be sold to another collection agency once you keep your end of the bargain?

What they are trying to steer you to is a settlement. I would recommend against a settlement on such a small balance. the lasting negative credit mark isn't worth it.

We don't. Not for hardship. Sorry to be blunt, but that simply isn't our problem. While, your story may help sway the individual collector, it isn't going to go far with the manager. Believe me, we have heard it all.

My advice to you is to keep sending the payment you have been in every month like clockwork.
I find it unlikely that a CA is going to sue over the difference between being paid in three months and being paid in 6 months. However, you will get calls and they will try to put you on their payment plan.

Take the time to discuss your financial situation calmly with the collector and don't mention the pregnancy. If you try to play the pregnancy card, the collector will say, "Congrats. That's great. You knew you had this bill when you chose to get pregnant" And something to the effect of, "Wow, babies can be expensive. I know, I had two. We need to help you with a payment that will pay this off before the due date. I can give you XX payments of XX"

I posted a thread on negotiating a awhile back -- if you search my user name you should be able to find it.

While the CA may be a law firm, they are just a collection agency until they sue you. That means you don't need to stress out too much. Negotiate for the payments you need and be ready to give a little.
