What is the name of your state? California

I am a member of a yahoo group maintained by my home owner association. The top guys, who are also home owners and incharge of the association do not pay heed to the numerous complaints that the owners have against the builder. These guys are supposed to be our advocates against the builder. The complaints range from deviation from building plan, poor quality building materials etc. Recently in anger and frustration, I called one of the top guys corrupt person and a manipulator, by posting this in the yahoo group. Does this count as a slander and libel?

Google those two terms because you do not know the difference.

But the answer is a definite maybe. If the guy is not corrupt and a manipulator, you might have committed defamation; if he is, then truth is a defense and you are definitely okay.

Libel is written defamation (slander is oral), and, yes, what you wrote could probably be considered libelous if it cannot be proved true. If I were you, I would delete your post and/or offer a retraction.

(oops, sorry seniorjudge - I did nandgs homework assignment for him/her)

And, understand, OP, that it is expensive to defend yourself in a lawsuit.
That's kind of a negative thing to say.

Think of all the mistresses (or boy toys) these attorneys have who would go shoeless if there were not expensive legal bills!

It makes me want to cry....

Well, it would be worth every penny, SJ. I need a boy toy right about now. Should I get myself back in school?:D

I guess you should hope that he is not the litigious sort, and then get that retraction posted quickly. At least you are bound to have gotten his attention :)
