uh, the American Legion?
You are correct.

So (as some would have it), if you say, "I love America" and burn a flag, it's okay.

If you say, "I hate America" and burn a flag, it's a crime.

This is the same as "hate crimes": If you say (as you are punching someone in the face), "I hate you, you dirty [insert favorite racial, ethnic, religious slur]", then you commit a hate crime. If you say (as you are punching someone in the face), "I hate you, you dirty man", then you do not commit a hate crime.

Stupid.

Stupid.

Stupid.

The Military?

Gulfbreeze, burning the flag is the proper and RESPECTFUL way to dispose of it. So perhaps, since you are such a patriot, you should educate yourself before telling someone they should have their citizenship stripped.;)
we weren't talking about "proper disposal" of the flag. we were talking about desecration of the flag. were you trying to spark an argument?

I hope everybody does know how to properly dispose of a flag but we all know that this is not the burning that is being talked about. We are talking about the big group of folks hanging the flag over a burn barrel as a sign of dislike.
I am glad you saw it right. The other person appear to just want to change it around and start trouble.

Oh, get off it. No one brought up flag burning but you, and that was in an attempt to impose your political beliefs on a rather dispassionate discussion of the law, during which you personally attacked two posters because you didn't understand what they were talking about.

bingo! See that is what pisses me off. people talk as though burning the flag is ALWAYS something done that should get the burner a one way ticket to hell. They never differentiate. Not that I necessarily think that anyone is going to hell for burning a flag but I find that those against flag burning never seem to understand proper flag protocol and believe that wearing the American flag is proper.

You are making massive assumptions Justalayman. You would HOPE people would know that but believe or not many do not know that that is the proper way to dispose of a flag. Many believe that throwing it in the garbage can is proper. So why do you assume? HUH?

Re-read what you originally -- it was not about desecration of the flag but about BURNING the flag. Two different things. You stated that burning the flag is not looked upon in a good "matter" (sic). WRONG. Depending on HOW the flag is burned is what seems to determine how it is looked upon.

Nope. i was responding to your tirade.
Here is a reminder:
apologize...i thought you were one of those who was seeking to fight for the right to sit. Actually, you don't have to stand...you can in fact (unless the law changed) burn the flag here in the states...its just not looked upon in a good matter. you don't have to remove your hat for the national anthem either...people have fought to remove UNDER GOD from it etc...the commandments were removed from a courthouse yard in the south...you see, there are people that will fight for the most stupid things (IMHO) while we have soldiers over in the middle east fighting and dieing for that right. so, please accept my apology.
This is your actual quote. Never did you say anything about desecration. You spoke strictly of burning the flag. Not always a negative thing however. Not is it not looked upon in a good matter. Those that look upon always negatively are uneducated and most probably believe that throwing a flag in the garbage is proper.

because I was taught as a very young boy how to dispose of a flag and believe, maybe mistakenly, that proper flag etiquette is still taught in our schools or in one of the scout groups or other groups young folks can be members of.

I would think that all young folks are exposed to proper flag etiquette somewhere in life.

as well, I would think it would be taught in the military and almost every person I know knows somebody quite close that is or was in the military. Not that it is typically a big topic of discussion but info is disseminated during typical discussions and I would think that the info would pop up from time to time in conversation.

I would think that that info would be somewhat common knowledge.

Maybe not.

Yeah I would hope so but I have found that it is not. Which is why you see people fashioning the flag into bandanas and shirts, letting the flag fly all night with no lights upon it, in all types of weather. Very few people know the proper way to dispose of a flag I have found. Even those that state they are patriotic and that if you don't agree you can leave the country.

About being disrespectful IN YOUR OPINION. All your examples were what you find disrespectful. And sorry but I don't listen to you any more than I listen to other voices in the wind. Nor do I need to be asked to express my opinion on here. Its a public forum.

ah ah...nose back in the corner.

sitting for pledge or athem...disrepectful
burning the flag (wasn't talking about proper disposal) here in the states...disrepectful
men not removing their hat for the national anthem...disrepectful

sure...some people even thought "dogfighting" was legal and nothing wrong....;)

i would probably go out on a limb, but i will bet there are others that will agree that its not just me that thinks these are "disrepectful". least the true patrotic ones and especially anyone who have served or has/had anyone serve in the armed forces, past and/or present.

Aren't you a patronizing twit? Okay one more time -- those are examples of what you find disrespectful. Just because YOU find them disrespectful (and others may agree with you) doesn't mean it is. it is just what you find. I have examples of what I find disrespectful (can we guess who made the top of that list right this second?) but that doesn't mean that they in actuality are. Nor does it mean that everyone else agrees with me. What is disrespectful or not is always subjective.
