What is the name of your state? Arizona.
My two children, one 11 and the other 14, Have come back from their mothers house with guages (huge holes) in their ears and stories that their mom promises to get them tatoos if they do well in school.
She recieves 30,000.00 a year in spousal support and does nothing to better herself even though her support ends in a year. She claims she can have the courts force me to support her due to "health issues". Basiclly, she is a pain pill addict.
I want to get full custody of my children and only allow her supervised visitation due to what I believe are questionable parenting practices.
What is the law regarding encouraging your children to mutilate their bodies???What is the name of your state?

NEGLECT:confused::confused:
You have right to report the case to the child protective services. But you have to know that you are obligated to prove this abuse.Child neglect is defined as a "type of maltreatment that refers to the failure to provide needed age-appropriate care," such as shelter, food, clothing, education, supervision, medical care and other basic necessities needed for development of physical, intellectual and emotional capacities. Unlike physical and sexual abuse, neglect is usually typified by an ongoing pattern of inadequate care and is readily observed by individuals in close contact with the child. Physicians, nurses, day care personnel, relatives and neighbors are frequently the ones to suspect and report neglected infants, toddlers and preschool children.
There are 4 types of neglect:physical neglect,Educational neglect ,Emotional neglect ,Medical neglect .
Do you think you will prove neglect in your case?I am not pretty sure.

what form of custody do you have now?

By the way, just because you find the guages and tattoos offensive, does not mean that everyone does, nor would it be considered a mutilation of one's body, by most people. And probably not by the court.

Are tats illegal now?

You do, of course, realize that until the kids are 18 no tat shop is gonna touch their precious lil skins, right?

Good gawd. I tell my kids all the time I'll pay for tattoos when they decide they want them... tell 'em I'll let 'em pierce their noses too... it's not gonna HAPPEN. They're too scared right now (at 10 and 8) to even get their ears pierced. But they also know that I used to have a shaved head and pierced nose... and I have 2 tattoos.

Turns out it DOESN'T ruin your life.

Move on. Really.

I think his point was that mom was going to take them to get the tats. In which case, yes, the tat shop will do the work.

I keep offering to pierce my kids myself. Uh, they don't seem all that interested in that idea. LOL

Although I did fold under pressure last year to the belly button piercing craze.

shaved head huh???

Hmmm... not around here they won't. The tat shops I've had mine done in all have huge signs hanging up to the effect of "I don't care how many times your parents are willing to sign. If you're not 18, you're ink-free."

Heh. I can't imagine why.

I'm VERY thankful my kids weren't teenagers then.

Oh... yeah. But, it was the early 90's and I had Seattle-esque delusions.

here (AZ), they have to be 14 years of age, with a parent's written consent.....

So I guess this dad will have one tat free kid, at least for a few more years.

Well just Oh. My. Gawd.

Don't tell Wild.
Never. I won't even tell mine. We were in front of a tat parlor the other night and she was going on and on and on about what she wanted and where it was going to be and blah blah blah blah blah, fortunately she settled for getting her nails done next door instead. ROTFL

Thx, you really know how to zero in on the issue at hand...

As far as free advise goes, I guess you get what you pay for.
I have tatoos myself, and never in a million years would I allow my child to alter themselves in a permanent way. This is not because I find tatoos offensive, but because I know that what is cool today might keep me from getting where I want to go tomorrow. Or at least make it more difficult.
Before I get the responce that tatoos can be removed, this I know as well. It is not very pleasant though and I don't recomend that process either. Hurts like the dickens. Best way to avoid it is not to mark your young body up until you are old enough to know what you want in life.

Personal feelings aside though, it's not illegal apparently for a 14 year old to get tattoos in your state. If you have joint custody, you'd be able to 'get' mom AFTER THE FACT for not seeking your consent, but not prior. And if she has sole legal, you have no say.

And in any event, nothing you've stated rises to the level of neglect.

Is inappropriate? Yes. Is it illegal? No. Most states guidelines allow 13-14 yrs & up...provided they have a parent there to consent/sign. Some tat shops will CHOOSE not to tat a minor- but most will, as long as they are covered legally by a parent's signature.

If you have Joint Legal Custody, it could fall under decisions you must make mutually...but it's going to take time/money to get hashed through in court.

Mom's future finacial situation isn't really your concern.

Uuuuh.... starter gauges aren't HUGE holes. They're slightly larger than regular ear piercings. Having said that, my kids have been told I'm fine with ear piercings (no more than two each), and everything else waits until they are self supporting and not living under my roof. But allowing them to get gauges or tats is not neglect or necessarily poor parenting.

You're unlikely to get custody if what you've posted is all you have.
