UA, Sent to Barracks-Not Brig?

I'm in Illinois; my brother's in Quantico, VA. After first deployment, he went UA, and just turned himself in. Rather than being put in the brig, he was ordered to wear a uniform and put in a barracks. Can't reach his attorney, yet. He was told nothing. Is this common? Could they possibly be considering sending him back to his unit? We fully expected the brig, cm, but not this.
Can anyone give me some insight? Are they just waiting to transfer him to the brig? Do Marines wear their uniforms when in the brig?

1. This is very very unusual for the Corps to do this. In fact, this is the very first after my 37 years of hearing of any
Service Member being over the hill that long, and not being put in the brig.

2. He will wear utilities in the brig.

3. Unlikely you will be able to speak to his Attorney, unless you are summoned to testify, or give a deposition.

Still In Barracks

It's been over a week, and my brother is still in a Quantico barracks, performing maintenance duties all day around base. Has no training in maintenance as far as I know. Nobody has told him anything. Should be in the brig talking to a JAG by now, shouldn't he? Could it be they just haven't decided what to do with him yet?

He was a gunner when in Fallujah. Nobody has told him anything. Should be in the brig talking to a JAG by now, shouldn't he? Could it be they just haven't decided what to do with him yet?

When he says maintenance I don't think he means a maintenance MOS like doing oil changes and tire rotations on HUMVEES. I am pretty sure it means menial labor like policing the grounds for cigarette butts, painting rocks, washing windows etc. If he does not think he is qualified to do this type of work, then trust me they will train him.

The current Marine Corps policy on UA Marines is to send the Marine back to his/her unit where they went UA from and there unit will decide what to do with him. He is not in the brig because he turned himself in. He is not considered a flight risk hence no point in filling the brig up with his kind.

I get "maintenance" now. That's a big "duh" on my part.
Any idea when we'll know anything, like when they'll transfer to the unit? Days, weeks or months?
Could the unit discharge him, send him to the brig, re-deploy or any of those? Now I have more questions as this is not at all what we were prepared for. Thank you!

I don't remember if in your original post if he missed a movement. If he didn't then that makes things a little better.

Anyway, they could offer him a plea deal where he may be offered a discharge (other than honorable) in leu of trial by court martial. That probably is best case scenario.

They could also court martial him give him 6 months in the brig (making big rocks into little rocks) and a bad conduct discharge. I hope that doesn't happen.

The Marine Corps is not like the Army, they don't have a streamlined process for people that go "over the hill" to get out of the military. There really isn't anyone that can tell you what will happen. It is up to his command. I would though expect this to carry on for at least a few months.
