What is the name of your state? Arizona

using the form letter off the SPARC website I requested my childs school records from her school.

While I have received a call from the principal wondering why I wanted the info & I answered her questions (with in reason) I have received nothing from the school regarding my child's school records, etc...

>>>>how much time is considered "reasonable" before I move up the chain?

Thanks!

Quite frankly no more than a week and that depends on the child (age, grade, extent of school record).

Do you live near your child's school?
No - I'm about 100 miles away

I have been in contact with the principal via phone & e-mail but just never receiving anything in the mail... until last night - I got my childs "file" can I just say there is not way it is complete... there is one piece of paper from preschool and about 5 papers from kindergarten and nothing from this year...

how hard is it to copy the ENTIRE file?

gosh.

Question... what exactly were you expecting?

My 10 year old's ENTIRE file (i've had it in my hands) contains a copy of a 'timeline' style progress report that is added to each year.... not a standard report card like is sent home. On that document is a picture of the child each year, the grades the child received each semester (quarterly grades are omitted), and the hours missed per semester.

In addition, there is a copy of the scores she received on standardized testing.

Finally, a copy of our court order.

The enrollment forms are all kept seperately and have to be requested seperately.
Nurse's notes are again seperate and must be requested seperately.
IEP information is maintained by the school special services staff and must be requested from them rather than the office.

None of it is together and all of it must be tracked down by talking to the right people. It's POSSIBLE that it's not being 'withheld' so much as not really being asked for.

How big is the school? Do they have a website?

I went looking for school records for my son. I found the school website online and downloaded the "Parent Handbook". It gave contact information for requesting various records and specified how much time to allow by mail AND who to contact to make an appointment.

Also, for 1st grade, the teacher would have the worksheets and assignments. So if you are looking for that kind of detail, you may need to talk, or email, her/him too.

Some of the schools now have "Parents Online" section available on their website. This information is pretty generic... but can be helpful depending on what you are looking for.

If that doesn't work... Parent/Teacher Conferences should be coming up soon, find out when, and get on the schedule for your child's teacher. Then let the principal know you are coming and expect to pick up any other records you feel are missing. They DO NOT want a "crabby parent" in the halls during P.T. Conferences so you should get great customer service.
