Hello.
I would like to know if an employer who offers domestic partner health benefits can charge more for the domestic partner than for a "spouse"?
For employee and spouse my company charges $33.23 per pay period and for my domestic partner $259!
During orientation I was led to believe it would cost $33.23 for my domestic partner so we signed up. Now I see that $259 is being added to my gross for this benefit. I understand domestic partner benefits are taxable.
When I asked HR about this I was told "the law does not consider you legally married."
Is this some sort of effort to negate the intent of offering domestic partnership benefits?
Thanks for your insight
