What is the name of your state? MI
I'm currently a non-working full-time student in MI. My wife is in TX. She plans on filing for a divorce. If she is awarded primary custody, can I go back after I graduate school and settle in, and petition the courts for primary custody? Would I have to petition in TX?

You could petition then however it would require a change in circumstances of the child to change custody. And yes it would be in Texas.

The change in circumstance meaning mine or the child's? Give an example. Please? Even if both parents are living elsewhere, do I still file in TX?

While mom & child remain in Texas, Texas it is. If BOTH of you were to be out of Texas, then the parent with the child could get it domesticated to the state they are in.

Change in the child's circumstances. Start with joint legal and physical custody. Then you are only looking at changing the AMOUNT of time.
