My mom bought two tickets for me and my 2 yr old son to visit her in Oregon in Feb 2008. The tickets were purchased online on Nov. 10th. Several days later I discovered I was pregnant, but still intended to visit in Feb, until two days ago when I was informed the pregnancy is being treated as high risk and I am not permitted to fly (I have a Dr. note saying as much).

The tickets were non refundable, so am I legally helpless in spite of the fact that I'm not flying due to medical reasons that were unforeseeable at the time of purchase, and I have no real choice in the matter? If so, who stands to gain the 1200 USD that I cannot have a refund on, or store credit for?

Is there anyone at all I can appeal to about this situation, even if only on a moral basis? Thanks in advance :)

Zig,
Perhaps she's posting because mom (who bought the ticket) lives in Oregon.

The question is will the airline allow you to reuse the ticket in say like a year? If not, then the airline gets the money. Did mom purchase trip cancellation insurance?

zig.... So what information did your 7-second search on google supply you with?
And why do you feel a need to answer a question you obviously feel is stupid, thereby wasting your own time? Or is your time that invaluable?

Thankyou to the second user who answered, no, we did not purchase travel insurance. I will ask the airline if they will be able to change the dates on the tickets in any way. Thankyou for the advice.

Travel insurance or trip cancellation insurance would not have helped in this case, the airline did not cancel the flight. Even in such case where a flight is cancelled, if the airline can reschedule the insurance will not help.

Oh, blimety...I guess I didn't answer your question well enough.
In AMERICA, non-refundable means just what it says. Legally AND morally.
So, tell me, what did the airline supervisor say when they were asked about this?

Racer are you sure? Because I have personally gotten a refund through my trip cancellation insurance because of a medical issue I was having.
