What is the name of your state? New York

Hi a new company took over our business so we all had to fill out new W4 forms. The person who is doing the forms can't seem to get mine right. First she had me down for having 3 dependents. She fixed that but now I am seeing something on my check stub that wasn't there before and I have checked a few other employees stubs including those who are filing the same way I am i.e. claiming zero and having extra taken out, and none of them seem to have this on their stub. They don't know what it means and neither do I sense these stubs are different from our old ones. I have sent an email to our humand resources for an explanation since I work the overnight shift and they come in two hours after I get off but they haven't bothered to get back to me. If it means anything I am a union employee.

Under filing status it says

Federal Single:0
State NY Single :0

This is the extra that no one else has and that wasn't on my stub before that I have questions about. Would someone tell me the purpose of this on my paystub? I just don't want to have any issues with the IRS and I definetly don't want to owe.

Local 1: New York City-R,Single,1

Thanks

Every payroll system is different. If you are having an additional amount deducted, that may not show on your stub; not all systems do that. The fact that you are a union member is irrelevant.

Try here to see if you withholding is as expected:

The thing that bugs me is that I am the only one who has this on the paystub. None of the other union employees have it either. On the other side of the paystub it shows the extra I'm having deducted and the union dues. I will have to try and get in touch with them again. It just seems very odd that no one else has this on their stub.

Unfortunately, sounds like you'll have to put in some legwork to get this resolved then. (Enlist your delegate's help! You're paying union dues, might as well reap some of the benefits.)

Schedule a face to face meeting with HR to discuss the withdrawal. Remind them that the law requires your written permission to make any withdrawals from your paycheck and, as far as you can tell, you have not authorized this charge in writing or otherwise. See what their response is.

Good luck.

If the stub says Local-1, it's probably city income taxes. If it were a union deduction it would be on the deductions "side" of the stub with the deduction amount next to it.

The OP only mentioned taxes in his original post.
