Some of you know my story: daugher and I are currently living overseas and return to the U.S. in the summer.

This year my daughter is attending an international school and will return next year to the private school she's attended since 3rd grade. One issue we've had is that DD has not been able to get some of the classes that she would be taking if she were at home, so she is doing an Algebra course on line. Foreign language has been a problem too. She should be taking French II, but her current school does not offer that until high school. Instead she's been taking courses in the language of the country we are living. This is a good thing because this is also her dad's native language.

So this is the problem. DD is anxious, as am I, to smoothly transition back into her old school and rejoin her classmates next year, so we've been trying to find a way for her to fulfill the French requirement. She's done well with the online math, has been responsible about keeping up, and grades are good, so we thought she might do French that way in the summer.

Because dad gets make up time in the summer, DD will be at his house 8 weeks. I was going to speak with him about the French course, but my daughter says it is better not to. In her words, "he'll just make a fuss." So my question is, does he need to be informed or to agree about this? Daughter has her own room and I can send her with her own laptop. There is a high speed internet connection throughout the house. Typically, she is at home with her stepsister, and they are basically hanging out, watching TV, and on the computer anyway. I am not asking/expecting dad to alter his plans for the summer.
What do you think?

is this really all that big of an issue you can't figure out??? get her rosetta stone and be done with it

Let dad feel useful by helping him help her with her language class. Wouldn't that make a great bonding time!

That it is an internet course shouldn't make that difference with dad.

If you think it trivial, you could always just not answer and save yourself that minute, no?
Anyway, there have been about a zillion comments that CPs should not schedule things (extracurriculars, etc.) on the NCPs time, so I was concerned that something like this might be taboo.

This really isn't the same as an extra curricular. It requires no effort or inconvenience on dad's part if he chooses not be be involved. She can do it while he is at work, and no one has to be inconvenienced at all.

Ditto here..:) Gives Dad and Daughter a new and maybe different experience to accomplish together.

I’d leave out the part about how being overseas is linked to the problem. I’d just leave it with, “DD wants to take French II over the summer online.

I think he’d be silly to balk at an online course but try a few options. Some online courses require almost daily online participation others only occasional. Some courses move you through material completely off line and them you only submit something online at the end.

Try to see if there are a few possible options just in case Dad does want a vacation.

I'd change that slightly....

"Dd wants to take French II over the summer online, so she can get extra credit for school while you are at work. I will be paying for it."
