I am creating a personal retrospective that will be published as partial fulfillment of my MFA thesis. I am planning on referring to influential works or visual inspirations within the text and was wondering what the laws are regarding the reproduction of copyrighted works for reference purposes. I'm not sure what other information you may need to help me with my inquiry.

What do mean by "reproduction?" If you are referring to other works, even quoting passages or using pieces of other works, generally that is not an issue -- that is a "fair use" of the copyrighted work.
