What is the name of your state? Maryland

Hi, recently my employer gave me 2 options, get terminated or resign, for a misunderstanding on a leadership developement program assignment. The program had nothing to do with my responsibilities and tasks as an employee and was not related to my everyday work/job. The program is only a tool to help excel within the company. Currently, the managers that I did work for are in disbelieve of the situation and do not agree with the outcome but their hands a tied. Anyways, I'm in the process of acquiring a new job, but in the application they do ask if I have ever been discharged or asked to resign. I'm concerned about this question, I don't know what's the purpose, and I don't know what will be the outcome of my response. It's a catch 22. I'm seeking advise on what I should do. I'm also seeking for a lawyer to to consult to see if I can file a law suit for defamation of character and a couple of other thinnsg.

Defamation of character because not even a day went by and I was already informed by my coleagues about the rumors and things that the employees in the company were syaing about me and what happend. Which is all a lie.

At this moment I'm in the process of acquiring a new job, but in the application they do ask if I have ever been discharged or asked to resign. I'm concerned about this question, I don't know what's the purpose, and I don't know what will be the outcome of my response. It's a catch 22. I'm seeking advise on how I should handle this question. I don't want this to truncate my oportunity for a new job that is very much needed.

Well it won't be defemation if what was being spread around was their belief or opinion of what happened. As to what to put down, thats your decision to figure out what's the best option. Just be truthful
