What is the name of your state?
CO

Hi,
Assume that I have a website that organizes some contests and at the end of these contests I randomly choose a person as a winner and I send a link to him/her to buy his/her price for 1 dolar. There is no entrance fee, nothing to pay, you just apply to the contest and if you win you get a special link that only you can access and buy your prize for one dolar.
I dont give anything free.
I dont take money for joining the contest.

Is this legal?
Is it any kind of sweepstakes, raffle or gambling?

Any help would be appreciated.
Regards.

"Prize" implies that the person gets it for free.
Check with Colorado's Department of Consumer Affairs (or the equivalent).

I personally hate those commercials that advertise that such and such is "free." The consumer then reads that fine print that says that they have to pay the shipping costs. It's either free or it isn't.

Good point

Thanks for the reply.
Ok I will not fool the user with saying "free". I ll just say you will get this thing for just $1 if I randomly choose you or you win a specific contest. Since this is a website I will probably have users from other states too. So other than checking with Colorado's Department of Consumer Affairs I was looking for a more general information.
So if anybody has an idea whether if this is some kind of sweepstakes, raffle or gambling?
regards.

Free giveaway

Because I cant. Every state has different laws for sweepstakes. There are lots of issues you have to deal with if you give something free. And I do not want to deal with these problems. So I thought if I sell this thing it wont be sweepstake. But I am not sure that I can sell something just to a specific person with a funny price. The funny part is I can not find a affordable lawyer who understands these issues. The one I found asked for a $400 hourly consultation fee. I am just a guy who tries to start up a business and do not have that kind of money.
So any help would be really appreciated if someone has an idea about selling to a specific person on a website with an unrealistic price is legal or not.
Thanks

Are you trying to tell me that the states makes regulations about whether or not you can GIVE something away with absolutely no strings attached?

Please educate me...
