An employee has a 70 mi commute to work. An offsite job location is close to an employee’s home, however further away from home office. One afternoon, employee is asked to pickup supplies at home office required to perform a task at the offsite location the following day. That evening, employee picks up supplies at home office, and commutes toward jobsite which happens to be on the way home. Employee uses personal vehicle to transports supplies that will be used the next day.
Can employee charge time and/or mileage on the way home for the portion of the trip that would be normally charged by any other exempt employee that lives close to home office?
Does it matter if this travel is within or outside normal business hours?
Can employee receive workman’s comp if in an accident while transporting supplies?
The following day, can employee charge commute from home to jobsite which is not normal part of daily commute (opposite direction)?
Can the employee charge time and mileage from jobsite back to home office while transporting deliverable?
Can the employee charge time an mileage when transporting deliverable back to home office if the trip back to the office is following day or outside normal work hours?
Is employee covered by workman’s comp if injured or company life ins. if ever in an accident while supporting these services?

Any other employee is compensated fully for the roundtrip and mileage. Employee that has commute is told cannot charge time or mileage. Thanks for any feedback. What is the name of your state?

Travel within the work day is compensable. The first trip from home in the morning and the last one back at the end of the day are not.
