A twenty mile round trip bike commute, even rain or shine, is not that hard.

Here exactly what you need

Bicycle clothing ~ $70 (3 sets, basic nylon stuff, not dorky Tour de France tights.)
You never, ever fail to amuse me, xylene! :D :)

I wish I lived in Arizona. It's great to ride bikes out there. Great surface for road bikes, but then again I don't need to get attacked by a cougar or coyote. In Philly you'll just get a homeless guy or someone who will pistol-whip you. Good times.

I have a unitard. It's sweet. jk.

Biking is okay. I wonder how much we could cut down on America's obesity problem by making people ride to work....hmm.

In Colorado, we combine the very best of AZ and Philly, as you have described them: we bike, carry pistols, and pistol-whip the cougars and coyotes! :D

Sounds like my kind of state. The murder rate is insane here. 400 murders and counting here and well, it's just not great to be walking, biking, even driving in certain areas. I LOVE biking. I bike about 38 miles every saturday. I totally enjoy it, but the path to work is exactly what I said, a pro cyclist hill. About 4 of them. I would probably die by Wednesday.:)

my court date is in 21 days. so I don't want to ponder what I don't know what might happen. that makes sense.

What do you do with the Gila Monsters? Very nasty creatures..... or are they south of CO?
They're an AZ-type of creature. I'd FREAK OUT if I saw one up close!!

I was only joking about pistol-whipping cougars and coyotes. :p Part of that whole "Colorado mystique" thingy we try to cultivate.

We do have LOTS of coyotes near our house. A group of 5 coyotes were hanging out across the street a couple of months ago. They had a howling contest with our 3 hounds: we don't know which group "won," but it took a lot of howling before they were all finished expressing themselves. ;)

Wow, thanks everyone for the comments!

Biking will be an issue. My job is surrounded by the ghetto. Last Friday I had to walk to a local restaurant from work and did not feel safe at all. My schedule is from 4:00pm until Midnight or later...so the treck home is not safe even by day in that area, let alone night...
Also, the shortest distance home is an 8 mile road with 55mph speed limit. It would be great for biking except for the rediculous number of dead deer littering the side of the road; would I be next? Many large hills as well.

I'm not procrastinating by any means, but I don't think it would be safe in the slightest if I were to bike.

Follow Up:
I spoke with the sales representative for the Moped and he insists that Walton County is legal to drive the moped without a drivers license. He began reading off a letter he had from an attorney. When I asked what county ordinance the Attorney is referring to in the letter, he said Forsyth County.

Apparently, State Law 40-11-28 only defines a Moped based on mechanical specifications/limitations and it is up to the lower governments to declare if a valid drivers license is required to operate the bike.

The local library does not have a law section for city/county ordinances so I will stop by the local courthouse tomorrow to see if I can get access to their law library and ordinance section.

Please review and advise.

Thanks again,
Chris

Might have to move.

I'd be wary of a salesman making a sales pitch in your situation...

That'd be wise, to go to the library and check for yourself.

At this point, the only "advice" I have for you is a story from CO, which is merely illustrative in value:
The voters of Denver have twice voted to make possession/use of 1 oz or less of marijuana legal.

The State and the Feds don't care a bit what the voters of Denver think. Both are perfectly willing and able to prosecute THEIR laws in Denver County, and they DO.

So...even IF your salesman is correct (which I do doubt), other, higher-level types of law enforcement may not care about Poobah County's local laws, and hold you responsible to the State and/or Federal levels of laws.

It's something to consider, at least.

Have you tried to carpool home? Does anyone want to drop you off on their way home in exchange for $$$. Their commute is cheaper and it's less than a taxi?

If You Going To Be On A Public Roadway

You probably need some kind of operators permit / DL. The sales guy does not know what he is talking about, I mean why would you take the word of a frikkken moped salesman, on any issuse of law. Think about it. He just wants to sell the moped, and move on to the next one.

You are not the first, or will you be the last, DUI, to try the Moped dance. If they have to yank your DL, cause in their eyes, you are not responsible enough to operate a motor verhicle - CAR, in a safe manner, on the public roads, do you really think they are just going to let you drive a Moped, another Motor Vehicle?

You need to check your specific state laws, and only listen to a lawyer from your state, who know his DUI stuff.

Do not listen to the Moped Salesman.

I am surprised I even had to include that last line.

Well the Moped Sales Guy Said it was okay, officer.

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Stupid is as stupid does, and just food for thought, and the kitchen is always open.

This one is too funny.

Well then you will definitely want the street cred and getaway power of a fractional horsepower moped.

Bikes are silent and fast, explosively fast on an escape sprint.

Mopeds, loud, no get away power, top speed of like 15mph...

I prefer power assist bicycle. Peddling and down hill slops recharge motor. Provides enough power to maintain at least 12mph. With some peddling, 18mph standard.

I rode up to 130 miles a day on a mountain bike (no power assist). Almost, I mean almost broadsided a fox than crossed the road in front of me. Probably scared the fox more than me, but I got a good view of his full set of teeth. Worse were the skunks. Never got quite as close as I did to the fox (another inch I would have run over his tail at least), but skunks have no incentive to get out of the way a bicyclist.

"Your" fox oughta come meet my hounds. :D

They just chased one out of the yard this morning, to my laugh-out-loud amusement. :p
