I would like to see that report.

While I can't add anything to the final dispositions of those charged in LCpl Rother's death, I do have a copy of the investigating officer's (Col Angel) 53 page report of the incident (to include Gen Gray's endorsement). All the names are there (none "blacked out") - the only omissions are the SSN's. It doesn't have all the witness statements, just the report submitted by Col Angel. If anyone would like to see it, please let me know. This report is still used today by many Marine Corps units to prevent this from happening agian. Be warned though, if you do read it, it'll bring out emotions - good and bad - when you see what went wrong, who was to blame, and the efforts put in to find him by Marine and civilains.
I spent quite a few hours back in 1991 reading the findings of fact for this JAG investigation as a lieutenant. I run a company now that requires a lot of accountability and would love to hand it over to a couple of my "lieutenants" that never had the military experience and could be bettered by the experience. Whatever information that you have on the case would be greatly appreciated.

I can send you a copy if you PM me your email address.

I just stumbled across a good read. The book is called WHEN THE POOR BOYS DANCE. By GF Borden. It is a dramatization of Jason Rother's trek through the Mojave.

Hate to bump such an old thread but I think, anyone with any type of military interests would like to check this book out.

I know I haven't contributed lately (will try and fix that), but happy holidays all...

Rother's Unit

Found this thread while doing research for a class on Naval Leadership and Ethics. Rother's unit, according to Case Studies in Ethics for Military Leaders by CAPT W. Rick Rubel and Dr. George R. Lucas, is BLT 3/2. Battalion Landing Team 3/2.

To the family of this young Marine: I am sorry for your loss. Please rest assured that this case has become required reading for all future Naval and Marine Corps Officers, so that this tragedy may never again be repeated.

God Bless

I was there.

If you have more ? please feel free to contact me. I was in the unit 3/2 when this all happened. There is much more that took place than what you can read in a report. Like most bad things, there was more than just one or two things that went wrong for this to happen. I would gladly fill you in on things that happened.

I was a USMC lieutenant in 29 Palms the evening Jason was reported missing. Me and my unit departed Camp Wilson and searched for LCpl. Rother for 2 days, starting on what I think was a Friday night. I remember it like it was yesterday. I didn't know Jason, but I love him all the same.

Do I know you?

I read that you are Jason's half brother. I am his nephew. I'm just wondering what your name is. (dunk_mn).

Not in vain

i am surprised ppl are still talking about Jason, i would like to thank you for posting this. You see Jason was my Half brother and i was 7 at the time this happened. My family will not talk about this. I decided to look it up myself. I do remember hearing my mom talk about it. but again thank you. if anyone could give me anymore info that would be great!
I had just transferred from 3/2 prior to their ill-fated training exercise at 29 Palms and know most of the Marines mentioned in the investigation. Knowing some of the individuals involved, I imagine (but can't prove) that there is probably more to the story than is discovered in the testimony documented in the investigation. Nevertheless, I just wanted to let you know that the loss of Jason struck me deeply (though I did not know him) and every year until I retired from the USMC, I used the details of the investigation to teach those in my charge the tragic lessons learned at Jason's expense. In my current role as a high school JROTC instructor, my senior class cadets continue to receive the same "Rother Investigation" class in hopes that the failures of some good men will never be repeated again. Small consolation, I know, but I hope that this may somehow be helpful to you.
