What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Kansas

My husband and I have a friend that was terminated from his position on Tuesday. He was told that if he said he was terminated there would be no severance, but if he said he was leaving for personal reasons they would give him severance. Is this legal?

It is, because there isn't a law that says they can't.

Of course it's legal. Severance is not required by law in 47 out of 50 states (including Kansas) and would not be required by law in these circumstances in the remaining three. It's entirely up to the employer who is eligible for severance and under what circumstances.
