State is GA:

Washing machine flooded our upstairs and part of downstairs. The landlord sent out people to clean up the mess (dry the carpets and replace some tile). After the mess was cleaned, the landlord called and tried to tell us that we're liable for the damage because we owned the washing machine.

Are we liable or should this be covered under their homeowners insurance?

At least start talking to your homeowners insurance about this and THEY will surely have an idea about it.
I'm SURE you meant they should talk to their RENTER'S insurance company, right? ;)

OP - if YOUR machine caused a problem, then YOU are liable for it.

I have no idea why OP would think that anyone besides the owners and users of the washing machine would be liable for the damaged caused by their machine.
