Do I, as a parent, have a right to read a written statement from a "concerned parent" that maybe disparaging to my minor child? She's 12 years old and her "boyfriend" broke up with her. She was crying and upset. She told me a few days later that she was going to have somebody beat him up. She tends to talk smack and I knew she was joking, but I told her I disapproved of her comment and that's not how issues are resolved. Anyway, this parent is not the parent of this boy. A week later this person took her letter to the principal, and subsequentally my child was suspended for a day, which I have no problem with the punishment. I have a problem with how everything was handled by the principal. There was no confidentiallity among the staff. It's a small school in a rural area, but there still should be confidentiallity. The principal acted as judge, jury, and executioner. My daughter did not get her due process. Another parent undermined us and the boy's parents as parents. This parent that wrote the statement doesn't like my daughter, as my daughter rejected her son. Her son used to continuously harass my daughter, but she always was able to up him one with her mouth. It looks like he always ran to mommy when my daughter got the best of him. I feel the principal based her decision on this statement, which I believe has alot of false accusations. The principal interviewed my daughter, the ex-boyfriend, the rejected boy, and two of my daughter's girlfriends. All five of them took it as a joke and stated that to the principal. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
