I keep geeting conflicting information so I am looking for a clear answer.

My wife and I are filling out the dissolution package. She has moved out of our house and left me to care for the kids, ages 17 and 15. I make $109,000 yearly and my wife has only ever worked part time earning around $12,000 a year. I will be paying her spousal support but we have elected to reduce that amount and have her not pay me child support.

Do we even have to go thru the exercise of completing the the child support part of the package?

A: Yes. You do the best you can and file it in your lawsuit. The judge will either approve it or make you do it over.

From what I understand - from a tax perspective - it is best to have those two things remain separate and clear.

And also from a legal viewpoint.

They are two different things.
