What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Mexico
Can a principle call your doctor and get medical information after you turn in your doctors note

Only if the doctor discusses your case... not your attendance or the information you have already given the principal.

See, if you say, "I was absent because I had typhoid." It is legal for the principal to call that doctor and ask, "Did Tami have typhoid?" because YOU already told the principal the nature of your disease.

Actually, I'm going to disagree with you. That WOULD be a HIPPA violation. Doctors cannot discuss ANYTHING with anyone other than the patient or guardian.

The principal COULD call the doctors office, and say, "I want to verify this note coming from your office." The doctor"s office would then say, "Yes, that note is legitimate." or "No, that note is a forgery." Then, the doctors office COULD choose to prosecute if the note from the doctor was forged.

The Principal can ask, but the Physician can only verify the fact that the patient had the appointment, not the reason the patient presented, or their diagnosis.

Thank You! The Hipaa law is hard to understand. I just wanted to know if I was understanding it correctly

cyjeff and I both probably misunderstood. If OP is stating that he had typhoid, no, the physician could not verify that. I completely misunderstood it to read that the note actually said that, and the principal was just calling to verify that information which was provided by the doc in the original note.

UNLESS, and this is a BIG UNLESS, the specifics of the disease are used for accomodation or benefit under ADA or other law.

The specifics of treatment are never in play... but, say, if a worker asks his employer for accomodation because of AIDS, then AIDS may be verified via validated doctor's note.

If that were the case, the school would already have obtained permission for the release of information, which they would forward to the doc's office ;)
