What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MI

I recently sold my engagement ring on Craigslist. I specifically made it clear that I do not have any paperwork on the ring because my ex (whom I have no contact with now) has it all. For this reason, I said "make an offer" rather than listing a price. The buyer (fully aware of all these details) and I met at a coffee shop where he hastily looked at the ring and then asked me to count the cash and then left. A week later, he e-mails me back saying that the stones are fake and he wants a refund or he will sue me. What is my legal obligation to this man? I offered him no guarantee, for I didn't have one. I also looked back at the ad and the e-mail transcripts, the word "diamond" was never exchanged by either party, including after he threatened to sue me, and he never asked me a single question about the quality or authenticity of the product I had listed. I sold this man a ring at 1/3 of the cost that my ex-fiance told me he paid originally, and now he is threatening to sue me for scamming him. If his story is even true, couldn't he have done any number of things to that ring in the week that he had it? What is my obligation here? Thank you for your time.

Tell him to enjoy his new ring.

Agreed.

One of two things happened...

The buyer changed the stones... or you got away from your boyfriend in just the nick of time.

Having said that...

While you are not on the hook to the buyer... you may be on the hook to the ex.
