What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey
A year ago I was set to graduate (May '08) but a miscommunication with the school counselor basically resulted in being short of just 6 credits. I was only informed a few months before graduation of this problem and so after several emails with her, I ended up being allowed to attend graduation ceremony but had to take courses over the summer to complete the credit requirements. When confirming with her what classes to take, she confirmed with me via phone conversation that it was all I needed to graduate and that I was set. After completing the requirements to graduate I asked my counselor again via email if all the requirements were met. This time she never confirmed it but said she would respond the next day. Unfortunately she never did. I waited a few weeks and emailed her asking how long I'm suppose to wait for my degree. No response again. 3 months later I email asking again or for directions on who to call or ask. I had waited for a while because I heard from some of my friends and classmates that they hadn't gotten theirs yet for whatever reason and I had no idea how long I'm suppose to wait. By February 09 my friends have gotten their diploma and I have received no notices from my school and my online school site has no holds on me to cause me to believe there's any problems. I finally called the school registrar late February 09 asking what happened to my diploma to which they ask me "Are you aware you didn't graduate?" Because I qualify to graduate they were going to put me on the August graduation list because I was informing them so late. Eventually I got someone to put a little effort to help me out and they put me on the graduation list for May 09 and informed me I would get my diploma June 09. The registrar was unwilling to have mine changed to say I graduated August 08, even though I think the mistake was theirs for failing to respond and/or inform me that I needed to resubmit a graduation application or that I didn't graduate. I would be getting a diploma for a 4 year degree and it will falsely say it took me 6 years to complete. I want to know if I have a chance of successfully suing if they decide they're not responsible and don't want to fix my diploma to what it should be.What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Chance?? Of course you have a chance. Based on your post though... it is about as close to zero as can be.
The school is NOT responsible for holding your hand. It is up to YOU to make sure that you are complete with your requirements.

Dude... by 21-25 (roughly the age range you'd have been during this fiasco), you're an adult. You're supposed to take care of problems in a timely manner, or suffer the consequences. SHould they have responded sooner? Probably. BUT, YOU should have followed up more aggressively as it was YOUR situation.

Sorry - suck it up.
