What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Missouri

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this topic, but wasn't sure where else to put it.

I currently live in a University supplied dorm. I pay room and board fees just like every other student. Someone in our dorm is stealing elevator lightbulbs. The dorm posted a notice saying that if any more lightbulbs are stolen, they will shut off the elevators and make them for service use only.

The dorm I live in is ten stories, I live in on the seventh. The only other way up or down is the stairs. Considering everyone is not in that great of shape (I am, I can make it up the stairs quite easily), is this legal for the dorm to do? Reason I ask is, when my parents come get me, I typically take home a lot of stuff. My parents are in their 50's, so they probably do not want to go up and down seven flights of stairs a few times.

The elevator DOES NOT have any security monitoring devices (i.e. cameras).

So is making everyone take the stairs legal? They advertise the dorm as having an elevator too. All the other dorms in the school have elevators and the students are free to use them.

I recommend you find your thief.

While there may be an ADA issue, that issue is not yours.

If there is anyone in a wheelchair on an upper floor, this is going to be a disability rights issue. If this is the case, I think that they may key the elevator (not shut it completely down) and only give keys to people who are in wheelchairs or have trouble walking with an accommodations form from the disability services department.

What I would suggest is that you educate people not to damage the bulbs or any other part of the elevator.

I figured as much.

So far no one else has stolen a light bulb. I still have no idea why people would do such a thing, but whatever.
