A very good friend of mine has been working for a pretty big company, and been put through a few positions through the past few years. Most recently he was demoted. From what I hear, he has been experiencing extreme stress over the past few years from the job, to the point where he every other morning he gags and dry heaves, has been back and forth to doctors for his heart, having feelings that he is going to have a heart attack due to the stress, so far has gotten a few stents put in. Before being demoted last year the company tried to get rid of him for no apparent reason, when luckily a few of his direct managers saved him. Recently I have heard the stress has gotten even worse. Also management treats them like dogs, as he has shown me emails sent to his team from high up management using profanity, which in my opinion a manager should never do in a professional business environment.

Is there anything that can be done?

having feelings that he is going to have a heart attack due to the stress, so far has gotten a few stents put in. Stents aren't surgically implanted just because someone is afraid of having a heart attack. Your friend has been disagnosed with heart problems by a cardiologist or internist.

Is there anything that can be done? Yes. Your friend should start looking for a new job that will be less stressful.

In case you guys haven't realized we are in a recession and not that many companies are hiring, they are cutting salaries and laying people off. He already has had his salary cut, and has been looking for over a year for a new job but no one is hiring or can accommodate the salary he needs to support him and his family. In the event something does happen due to all this stress and mental anguish can legal action be taken?

Not even remotely. Slavery has been illegal for many, many years now so if the stress is that bad, he is free to quit whenever he likes. If he chooses not to do so, he is now responsible for whatever happens to himself.

**A: the answer is yes, he can take legal action. And this is based on the fact that the law allows in general, any employee to sue their employer.
My response is not based on making a determination that your friend has a case. From reading your post, it is the opposite and your friend does not have a case.
