Is it legal in Pennsylvania for a high school Vice Principal to change an earned grade soley on the basis of tardiness? All class work was completed and grades earned per the teacher, but the Vice Principal lowered the grade because of tardiness.

Being on time and prepared is all a part of the student's committment to learning. A student who is consistently tardy is not an excellent student.

My college roommate (and yes, this was in PA) got a B instead of an A because she was frequently tardy to her Spanish class, which was at 8:00 am. As a result, she graduated magna cum laude instead of summa cum laude.

Get to class on time.

Seriously. If you look at the (your kid's) syllabus for the class, I'd be willing to bet that one of the requirements is being prompt. YEAH they can change the grade due to the kid being habitually tardy! Do you think *you* would stay employed if you were habitually late to work? They'd fire your butt. Tell your kid "Welcome to the real world."

School is the first place a person learns the life lesson of being at a specific place on time for every day they’re supposed to be there. They also learn assignments are turned in completed and on time. There are consequences for not following the rules. The consequence for being tardy in this case is a lower grade.

Just like work. When you have a job you have to be at that job on time for every day you’re scheduled to work. All assignments must be completed in their entirety and on time. The consequence of violating these responsibilities is being fired from the job.

Absent or tardy students / employees disrupt the classroom / work environment and have an adverse impact not only on the class flow / workload; but, also on morale.

School is where students start learning to be responsible and accountable for their decisions. Parental interference negates the lesson.

This is the student's issue to resolve (by being at class on time), not yours.

You have a problem with comprehension, don't you? YES, it is legal. One of the requirements that can be graded on (just like homework and tests) is attendance. Habitual absence or tardiness brings down the grade. That's really not hard to understand.
