What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
Hello,
Does anyone know who gets the interest on the arrears. Does it go to the children or does the state get to keep it?

Goes to the person receiving child support. When you go into arrears, the balance owed to the person receiving child support goes up due to interest owed. The person owed child support can see these amounts all separately.

Is interest automatic in some states or do you have to ask for it? I don't have any interest applied to anything and he started out owing $26K. It's now about $15K and isn't decreasing any at this point.

I'm sorry. The rest of my message, making it pertinent to the OP didn't make it, which was, "Are you sure it's earning interest for you?"
