What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL
My mother and former stepfather owned a house in FL. My mom got mad at my stepfather one day and went down to the courthouse and divorced him. No property settlement or anything (bad idea). They continued to live in the same house for several years, until she moved away.
They continued to correspond, etc.
He made improvements on the house, which he paid for.
My former stepfather was in his late 80's and wanted to sell the house for half it's value, to a neighbor, who ran errands, etc. My mother refused to sign any documents.
To cut to the chase, he passed away. (Much to my sadness) My mother is now the sole owner of the house, which stands vacant, and was damaged in a hurricane. Prior to this, it was worth $200,000 and has location, location, location.
My former stepsister is suing my mother for half the value of the house. She also said she kept the place up and mowed the grass. (We have reports to the contrary, including a citation from Code Enforcement). My mom paid the real estate taxes and also hired someone to cut the grass.
My mom paid a lot of money to a lawyer who said the house was hers. All of a sudden he called her and told her to sell the house for $50,000 to the neighbor and give my former stepsister half, minus his fees, of course.
He also said my former stepsister is "nice".
Is something rotten in Denmark?
