What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? hello everyone, I just found out that my apartment I've been living in for 5 years is illegal by the son who inherited the house from his father, my landlord, who just died. I was wondering how to get a certificate of occupancy to cover myself if the LL tries to evict me in housing court. any advice would be great. thanks

Easy - you just have to bring the apartment up to code and then call the Dept of Buildings to come out and inspect it.

how would I bring it up to code? it's illegal and wouldn't the DOB give me a date to leave. I just wanna make it as hard and long as possible for the LL to evict me, while I look for an apartment that meets my needs. thanks

Okay, let's get SERIOUS here....
YOU cannot get a COO on the property. That can only be done by the landlord... AFTER he has brought the unit into compliance and had an inspection completed.
In the meantime, it is ILLEGAL for you to live there... and you have NO obligation to pay rent.
