I have been renting through the same property management company for 7 years now. I have rented 2 places through them..... I applied for a new place through them again, due to a huge increase in rent at current house and hating the place--- and was denied. I have no flaws on my rental record, I have never even been one day late or short on rent. I have had walk-throughs yearly and they are always AMAZED at how clean and nice I keep my place..... It makes no sense. I told them I was in the middle of bankruptcy and she said no big deal about my credit because I have always paid them and it is not relevant. I feel like the owner is discriminating because we have kids? or ??? What are my rights? Anything I can do? I feel betrayed..... Can I request copies of all files/notes they have on me??? Oh, they won't tell me why I was denied either?

You are SILLY * you are not being discriminated against - stay were you ARE.

You have become a LIABILITY because of your bankruptcy and will most likely have problems getting utilities and services in your name for a new property with that on your record.

Ask for a written reference and rent elsewhere. You are defensive because of your poor budgeting causing the need to file bankruptcy.

You have not been discriminated against. Look for a new place to rent.

In fact since you filed for BK, management is NOT allowed to even send you a bill for the rent owed, as it is a collection attempt which is illegal. They could be seriously fined for doing so.
