What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Pennsylvania.

I ordered a learn to buy real estate program on a 30 day free trial. There was to be an on-line portion and another piece by mail. I never received the on-line portion and the mail piece arrived 3 weeks later. I never opened it and returned it after the 30 days. I sent it back and was charged $70. I thought it was over. I got a call from the company and advised I was not happy and returned the materials. The man tried to resell me, but gave up.

My credit card company soon after reissued my card with a new number due to a security breach. The other company was trying to charge me for months because they did not consider my phone conversation and return of materials as a valid termination. But, they still had the old card number. Now, they have advised me that they are ready to go to collections for the unpaid fees for the last four months that they had their materials. I do not fell I own the fees, but do not want to ruin my credit score.

Since you returned the product, show them your Certified Mail Returned Receipt, as any good consumer knows to have for tracking purpose.

Did it say in the sales agreement how you were to notify them prior to the 30 day free trial if you wanted to cancel. ?
If its listed that a formal letter must be issued to them, then they might have something to go by, since a phone call may not fall under proper cancellation notification.

Why didn't you return it WITHIN the allowed 30 days??
The fact that you returned it AFTER (your post!) may be that you are obligated to pay the agreed amount(s).
