What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Maine

Hi,

I live in Maine and I have a teenage son. He turned 17 two weeks ago. His girlfriend is also 17. I was using my sons laptop the other day when I accidentally came across some extremely graphic and lewd photos of my son's girlfriend that appeared to have been taken by her, of herself. There was another file with pics of the same nature or worse of another girl, who I dont recognize, so I don't know how old she is.

My question is wheather or not it's legal for these teens to be emailing or texting these photographs to one another, even if they've all consented to it. Frankly, I'm disgusted and I hope there are some legal ramifications.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Well, then let me put your mind at ease.

Creating, owning and distributing child pornography - which is what this is - is VERY illegal. Just his owning the photos is enough to send him to jail... if he sent them to a buddy or to anyone else, he could go to jail for decades.

Oh... the girl too.

Ok.. well, I certainly don't want my kid to go to jail, but I'd like to scare the pants back on him for certain! I DO NOT approve of this behavior and I'm no prude, but there is just something inherently wrong with this in my opinion.

My question then becomes, where can I find the law that states this is illegal, so that I can quote it, when I speak to him about this?

And, of course, your son no longer has a laptop, yes?

p.s. Rather than giving him the statute, I'd make part of his punishment researching Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, the law regarding same in Maine, and the consequences. And then writing a paper on same. 1000 words (~5 pages) should do it. Handwritten. Grammar and spelling count.

He can do his research the old fashioned way - in a library.

Excellent! Don't forget punctuation and it must be legible. Mom - find a comfy place in the library to read a book and watch your son to make sure he doesn't take any shortcuts (i.e. computer work.)

He doesn't get to hang out with his friends until it's done and done to your satisfaction. Footnotes would be nice. The laptop is gone.

You are understandably shocked and disappointed that your son, your baby, is engaging in anything sexual. But despite this, please make sure he understands proper condom use. You can't control his every waking moment without literally locking him up in his room like a prisoner, but you can help lessen his chance of becoming a teen parent. Last thing this world needs is yet another baby born to ignorant teens for the taxpayers to support.

Also you may want to talk to the girl's parents. Your son's wrong here was in saving the pictures. Hers was taking and sending them. There was a court case a year or two ago where a girl took pictures of herself nude and sent them out, and those who simply received the pictures without asking were also in deep trouble legally. What she's doing could result in others getting in trouble. Registering as a sex offender is for life.
