What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

i have thought of a good product to bring to the market but im not sure if i am even able to patent it so my question is if there is already a product that exists that is similar but i change the purpose of the product and the size of the product am i able to patent the new idea?

There is no way to answer your question without a lot more detail. It is general possible to patent improvements and changes to existing products, but the improvements have to be separately patentable, i,e, be useful, novel and nonobvious. Your best bet is to sit down with a local patent attorney or patent agent, who can review your invention and advise you accordingly.
