What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
ny state...nassau county
i moved out of what i am sure is an illegal basement apartment in oyster bay and landlord is withholding security deposit claiming she cant afford to pay it back...there was no lease... do i have any legal recourse or do i just turn her in ?

You can sue her for the security and get a judgement.

What makes you think the bacement is illegal, and how would "turning her in" be helpful.

That's not a valid reason .

You wait a reasonable amount of time for it's return per law ( 30 days is reasonable ) ,the sue .

Depending on your area ( I believe nassau is within the 5 Burroughs of NYC ) is how you sue .

Hey BL... I believe that Staten island is the fifth borough, but I looked over Nassau's civil court website, and it does mention NYC courts.

All about evictions, nothing about security deposits.

Cheers.
